The Great Pop vs. Soda Controversy
October 9th, 2009

Soda? Pop? Coke? What do you call the fizzing beverage that flows at the drive throughs and restaurants? Well believe it or not a survey was done and determined, by county, what it is known as. This is a very interesting map to say the least. Being from Milwaukee it seems the whole eastern side of Wisconsin calls it “soda” while everyone in the western and northern part of our state all the way west through Minnesota and out to Seattle calls it “pop”. Even people in Chicago and Michigan call it “pop” and this extends eastward to the east coast where it is again called “soda”. Everyone down south just calls it “coke”. So check out this fun map and to find out what it is called in your region, although you already know, unless you’re in the Virginia area where the three terms seem to converge and you are probably really confused. we were just talking about this on the way down south - as we stopped in different places and asked for a “coke” - “yeah, what kind?” ![]()

It’s funny how once you go to Madison and then north it’s all “pop” country, and I don’t know why but “pop” always sounded un-sophisticated and too down-homey, but so may people call it that. According to the map it should probably be the Great Pop vs. Coke Controversy.
